Why is lady Macbeth so aggressive in support of her husband?

It's a long time since I read this.....I thought she was the instigator of his evil deeds, she wasn't supporting him she was pushing him. Women had no power in their own right in those days, so for her to be 'first lady' she needs to ensure that Macbeth remains king.
